The HOPE story for February, 2006
A CASE IN POINT
In early December we received a call from an elementary school
teacher in a nearby city. She wanted to know if Bethel could help
two children whose family was in crisis. Bethel was able to help.
James and Michael ages 11 and 8 had been staying at the homes of
their school friends for about a week. Their dad, who had custody
of them at that time had let them stay overnight with school friends,
but he did not pick them up from school the following day. He had
just abandoned them and left the state.
HOW IT HAPPENS
The teacher contacted the children's mother, who is still
in an extensive outpatient drug rehab program each evening. Their
mother, Beth loves her children, but is not currently able to provide
a safe home for them. She has a job, but does not have a drivers"
license. There is no available extended family to help.
Your gifts can help Bethel "be there" as an extended
family for children of families in crisis.
With the coordination of the children's teachers, their mother,
Bethel's community outreach manager and the juvenile court,
the children were placed at Bethel in mid December. Their teachers
brought James and Michael to Bethel after school. Beth got a ride
and met her children there.
The juvenile court returned custody to the mother with the understanding
that she would privately place them at Bethel until she finished
her rehab.
Both James and Michael have settled into their cottage and are
doing well. They call their mom almost every day. Mom visits them
every weekend.
A BETTER ALTERNATIVE
Without a home like Bethel, Michael and James would be placed into
State's custody. There, family interaction and Christian nurturing
is often hindered. Thank you for helping Bethel stand ready to minister
to children of families in distress.
For the protection of our precious children, names have
been changed.
Pray for all children whose families are in crisis, with no extended
family to help. Pray that a neighbor, teacher, church member, pastor,
doctor, policeman, emergency responder, judge, prosecutor, criminal
attorney, school, hospital or other agencies social worker, counselor,
or YOU will see their plight and encourage them to contact Bethel
Bible Village.
Bethel stands ready to be an encouraging surrogate extended family
for children of families in crisis.
For 51 years (since 1954), Bethel has been God's House for
1,341 children needing a safe and nurturing home.
